Gay disco glammers Scissor Sisters stormed the UK charts after being virtually ignored in their native America for more than two years.
Their music was picked up by London gay club DJs in 2003 and soon all the trendy fashion and music magazines were calling them the next big thing.
That prompted music moguls at Polydor to sign them up and soon after, their first song Comfortably Numb – a Pink Floyd cover – reached number 10 in the UK singles chart.
A string of wacky disco pop tunes followed and Scissor Sisters scored the highest selling album of 2004 with their debut self-titled record. But, back in their native US, the album was banned from the Wal-Mart supermarket chain for its “offensive language”.
They managed to repeat their initial success in 2006 with the release of their second album Ta-Dah, which spun off the number one disco anthem I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’.
The group, which came together through a love for dressing up and kinky New York parties, controversially named themselves after a lesbian sex position. They have inspired obsession in some fans, who have set up community websites called things like Scissor Sisters Party Bus and Ana Matronic Appreciation Society.
They have fuelled their fanbase by headlining major British alternative festivals, and performing at Live 8 in 2006.
